The Present, Page 1
2016.
Police Officer 4 Santos Madrigal thoroughly inspected and wiped the dust from his beloved gun, a.k.a "Wifey".
He heard a knock. "Hey Santos. Wanna have some lunch?"
"Yeah."
Santos hid Wifey in the only place he knew and had lunch.
It was scorching hot as he mused how he was "stuck". Ten years in service and he was still stuck as serving as an Intelligence Officer. Not that it was bad. It was Santos' dream job. It constantly reminded him of the stranger he saved several years ago.
The stranger, too, had been an Intelligence Officer. Somehow, the wounded man had inspired him to pursue his dream as a Police... That man had also inspired her. Yet fate had torn them apart.
He shook his head. Ah, come on, Santos! Now's not the time to be daydreaming of her.
His friend looked at him and gave him a strange look. "Hey, have you heard? Someone new will be assigned here in our Division."
"I thought those guys at the Human Resource are the only ones who're supposed to know that."
His friend grinned. "Well, I have my sources."
"Spill it." Santos said.
"Every heard of Police Senior Inspector Gabrielle De Guzman? I heard she's going to be reassigned here any time now."
Gabrielle De Guzman. Now that was a name Santos hadn't hear

The Past, page 1
Marilog District, Davao City.
The warm sunny day had encouraged the two ten year olds to play along the shallow riverbanks.
They often played hooky, preferring their wild imagination to the dullness of the four cornered room.
In the forest and the wildernerness, they role-played as the soldiers whom they frequently saw passing by in trucks.
The two were impressed by the guns they saw, the valor and the aura they displayed.
Santos had been throwing stones to the river when he saw a body near the tall grasses.
"Look Gabrielle! I can see someone along the bushes"
The two children approached the body and flipped him. It was a bearded man, with a gunshot wound on his leg.
"Help...." the wounded man grunted.
"What should we do Santos?" Gabrielle asked.
Santos looked at the body. "We should bring him to the Town Doctor."
"But he's heavy! And we're just kids" Gabrielle protested.
"It doesn't matter,he needs to be helped."
And so they brave two children carried the wounded man to the nearest Barangay Health Station.
It was an act of kindness that would change their lives.

Prologue
He could feel the warmth of the body start to ebb.
The life from his friend had slowly drained away.
Why? He asked himself.
Why had everything escalated to this point?
He looked at the body of his fallen comrade, his dearest friend. The friend whom he had promised to protect. The friend whom he shared his dreams and his ideals. The friend who was his pillar of strength and inspiration.
Where had it gone wrong?
He closed his eyes as the rain began to pour, remembering the earlier times when it had been raining bullets and tears.

About
Hello there!
The Oath is a story set in Mindanao, Philippines, as inspired by the recent events in my country (the vigilante killings gor example)
Two friends make a childhood promise to become police officers to serve their country. War displaces them, and they meet each other a decade later.
One has become Commissioned Officer, while the other never made the cut and starts as a a non-Commissioned Officer.
As they fulfill the promise of their youth, their faith in what they believe in will be tested when a vigilante group is after Juvenile Delinquents and Drug Addicts.
I was inspired by The Zombie Knight to start this as a serial fiction. I hope to post at least 2-3 times a week, preferrably 300-500 words per post.
This story is far from perfect, but if it manages to entertain you, then all is well!
*disclaimer: this is a work of pure fiction. Similarities to real life people are probably coincidences.
